M-B 280SE (W126)

- James Sadlier

This 280 looks superb, but drives even better. If there’s a score for engine smoothness, then this Mercedes gets a solid ten. Acceleration is moderate, so you need to put your foot down to keep up with modern traffi c, but the 280 glides happily along at cruising speeds. The automatic gearbox is fl awless and the brakes are accurate, if a little squeaky at times. The suspension feels well balanced, being free from creaks and rattles, and the power steering is as good as any modern car – it’s simply effortless.

BODYWORK CHECK

The years have been very kind to this Mercedes-Benz with immaculate paintwork and no signs of outside rot – much of that is thanks to this W126 having been kept in storage for most of its life. The chrome is pristine and there are no signs of damage on any part of the bodywork. One lovely feature is the original dealer plates from when the car was fi rst sold, both of which are in excellent condition. The car was also treated to a set of new Dunlop tyres in August, so the tread is healthy and safe, but the petrol cap fails to lock.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

All interior lights work, but the offside rear electric window operates to a point, but then refuses to close. The windscreen wipers also seem to work only intermittently and the radio might need some attention because it couldn’t pick up any frequencies. Aside from that, all other electrics, such as the sunroof, seat operation and blowers all function perfectly. One of the faux wooden strips along the dash needed to be reapplied but now looks complete, making the dash appear in fantastic condition. The boot is huge and comes complete with its original hazard warning triangle and new Dunlop spare.

UNDER THE BONNET

The horn, radiator, alternator and battery appear to brand new. All electric cables and rubber pipes are in fine condition, and nothing is loose. The belts feel tight and are in good condition and cableties keep everything tidy. Oil levels are correct and there are no signs of leaks. The engine bay is by no means concours due to surface corrosion on some components, but the surrounding paintwork presents very well. The sound deadening is coming away from the underside of the bonnet too, but the aftermarket Cobra alarm should give the next owner peace of mind.

THE CCW VIEW

This is a fine W126, in better condition than most with its rust-free bodywork. While there are a couple of issues to address, it is a mechanically sound investment that could reach show standard with little attention.
