WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?
The lumpy idle with the choke out soon clears as the engine warms, with a steady 50lb oil pressure showing. First gear requires a long throw, but the selection is precise through all ratios and the overdrive switch operates precisely for third and fourth gears. The clutch is light, with its biting point near half-travel. The steering feels confident through faster corners, without rattles or vibrations. The firm throttle pedal produces an enthusiastic response at higher revs, and the brakes feel adequate. Having been unused for many months, this Rapier will benefit from covering some miles.
BODYWORK CHECK
After a recent repaint, the Caribbean Blue exterior presents very well. The panel gaps are even and the chrome sill trim is straight and free from pitting. The inner, middle and outer sills have been replaced on both sides, and the floors are solid and well protected. The finish on both bumpers shows some age (the front more than the rear) while the chrome securing the lovely rear light lens
has pitted. The ‘faux’ chrome rear window inserts (readily available) need replacing, but the original wheel trims have bright chrome and only slightly worn satin black – another easy fix for the perfectionist.
HOW’S THE INTERIOR?
A busy dash display including separate amps, temperature, fuel and oil pressure all operate when tested, with just the timepiece appearing reluctant to move. The carpets are in good condition with little signs of wear, while the vinyl seats offer ample support. The centre console features black trim along the outer edge – missing from the driver’s side. The rubber dash-top has been repaired where heat has cracked
the surface, and the trim for the rear window also requires a repair. The roof lining is good, with just a couple of small marks. The two-speed heater works well, as does the original MW/LW Radiomobile unit.
UNDER THE BONNET
The engine bay looks clean and smart, with a freshly painted rocker cover and air filter housing, and no signs of oil or coolant leaks. Show standard could easily be reached. Several items appear recent, including the brake servo, radiator and alternator, and the vendor’s pre-sales check/service is yet to be carried out. The MoT history confirms just 6000 miles have been covered since 2006 - all without a single advisory. It also details three previous owners over 48 years.
THE CCW VIEW
A solid example with fresh paint, this rare pillarless coupé is an attractive proposition for any Sunbeam enthusiast, and priced competitively. Some interior parts may be difficult to source, but the thriving club scene should help keep it on show for many years.
