WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

It’s very lively throughout the rev range, giving an occasional ‘pop’ from the stainless exhaust. This particular Triumph has been treated to a raft of tweaks under the bonnet – the original ‘CP’ engine has been swapped for a later ‘CR’ unit, but that unit’s drop in power has been made up for with sympathetic tuning and the fitment of a ‘fast road’ cam. The steering is sharp and nicely weighted, there’s no squealing or pulling to either side under braking, and there’s a short, snappy throw to the gearshift, with the overdrive engaging correctly.

BODYWORK CHECK

Take a closer look at the Mimosa Yellow paint and you’ll spot some bubbling at the point where the bottom of the driver’s door meets the rear bodywork, something which is also apparent in the same spot on the nearside, although not to the same extent. There’s also some minor chipping on the edge of the driver’s door, but this should be easier to sort. There are a a couple of chips on the black paintwork on the rear bodywork, too. Otherwise the bodywork’s in good condition, as are the 15in Minilite alloys; they’re shod with matching Riken tyres, which all have plenty of tread and don’t have any cracks or sidewall bulges.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

Slip into this TR6’s cabin and you’ll be far comfier than most TR devotees, thanks to the fitment of cloth-trimmed Mazda MX-5 seats, both of which are in good order and don’t have any rips, marks or signs of damp. An aftermarket roll cage is fitted, which the mohair roof – also in decent condition – folds neatly around. Most of the interior is good, particularly the instruments and the wooden dash trim, but it’s let down by a missing stereo and tired-looking

windscreen demister vents. It’s also worth mentioning that while both side windows are free of scratches, the winding mechanisms need lubricating.

UNDER THE BONNET

Flick through the mountain of paperwork, which includes MoT certificates dating back to the Eighties, and you’ll see that tweaks added by previous owners include a conversion to rear telescopic shock absorbers, vented front disc brakes, work on the straight-six to allow it to run on unleaded fuel, and a 1984 respray. Everything seems to have been properly looked after, with no signs of any leaks, although the engine bay does have a slightly grimy appearance. Some detailing could improve the engine bay for shows, but otherwise it looks to be well maintained.

THE CCW VIEW

This TR6 isn’t the last word in originality, but all those tweaks do improve the driving experience. Get those cosmetic issues sorted and you’ll have a Triumph that’s well set up for touring. It’s well worth giving this one a try.
