1964 Autobarn Gecko

HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD IT?

I bought this in March 2018 for £2995. I was trawling eBay looking for something different, saw this – something I’d never seen before – and put in the opening bid. No-one else bid, and I won it from a private seller. I have tried to find more of these Mini-based kit cars but have drawn a blank. It would be interesting to know if any more are around. I spoke to the original builder of the kits when I got the Gecko. I believe he built 30 then sold the jigs to someone else, and another 58 were built – but don’t hold me to that! It is currently insured for £6k as I have no idea how much it is worth.

HOW MUCH HISTORY?

There’s no real history with the car. It’s had three previous owners, but

PROVENANCE Very little MODS In progress

HOW MANY LEFT? Unknown

the only paperwork that came with it were old MoTs, which show very little mileage was done between 2008 and 2018 when I got it.

HAS IT BEEN MODIFIED?

The only modifications so far are a pair of different front seats (as my bum would not fit very well into the original bucket seats) and I’ve also fitted an air horn.

WHAT’S LEFT TO DO ON IT?

As you can see it is up on stands getting ready for a new engine. I have a 1275cc A-series that I have checked over, and had the head worked on with new valve guides and valves, plus a new bypass connector as the old one was badly corroded. It’s had an alloy radiator and fan, and I’m getting some disc brakes and have a servo to fit.
