MAZDA RX-8 (2003-12)
With a cash injection from partner Ford around the turn of the century, Mazda’s new line of cars at the time were flourishing. Combined with a resurgent interest in performance Japanese imports, the doors were opened for a successor to the legendary RX-7 that would put the rotary engine firmly back on the map.
The RX-8 was quick, handsome and stylish, but it was also practical. With four seats that were accessed easily via quirky rear-hinged back doors, the coupé worked as a daily driver, transporting four adults in comfort. The unconventional design, coupled with an involving and rewarding drive, proved popular in Britain and good second hand prices mean that used examples are great value for money today.
Ownership is a little more involved due to the constant monitoring of engine oil levels to prevent undue wear to the rotor tips, but with the right care and attention you will be rewarded with a powerful, well-handling coupé that is
more practical and cheaper to run than a Nissan 350Z. Despite a reputation for failing engines there really is nothing to fear from a well-maintained RX-8.
BUYING TIPS
■ Check carefully for any signs of previous accident damage – rust really shouldn’t be an issue with these cars.
■ A compression test is always a good idea before buying. Look for history of regular servicing and oil top-ups using the correct lubricant.
■ Interiors are generally hardwearing, especially those trimmed in leather. Check for fully functioning gauges, switchgear and electrical equipment.
