HOW LONG HAVE YOU OWNED THE CAR?

We bought it as a non-runner in 2018 from the family of the original owner. It had been garaged and not run for over a year and took quite a bit of starting, even with a new battery and fresh petrol.

HOW MUCH HISTORY?

The first owner won it in a prize draw run by the Daily Telegraph in 1996. It was one of nine car prizes – all you had to do was to ring the telephone number attached to the car you wanted to win. It was serviced by the main dealer in Preston and we have a full set of service stamps up to February 2016. Since then it has been serviced by a local garage. There is also a history folder with lots of old invoices and MoTs.

HAS IT BEEN MODIFIED?

It is completely standard apart from the aftermarket stereo. We have the original Clarion radio-cassette player but we cannot use it because there is a problem with the EPROM and we can’t input the unlock code. We will be sending it off to Clarion for repair so that we can refit it and maintain the car’s originality.

WHAT’S LEFT TO DO ON IT?

We had the alloy wheels refurbished last winter and there are some stone chips here and there that need touching in. A complete rust-proofing is the next job followed by the fitment of a set of new tyres. The car is used for six months of the year (April to September) for car shows and then put on SORN over the winter period. There is now a looming problem with getting hold of components such as the airbag and pre-tensioning seat belts because these are no longer made for this particular model.

WHAT WE RECKON

‘These little hot hatches are fastrising classics, so you are right to be checking values. What few people yet realise is how rare they have become. There are now five times as many 205 GTIs on the road as

these later 106s. With its mileage and provenance, this one is near the top of the pile, so this is what you should be insuring it for. I think that it will also be worth more next year.’
