THE HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS
ONE YEAR IN ‘Here I am aged 18, at the Austin Ten Drivers’ Club’s first-ever national rally, which was held at Beaulieu. I was one of the first members of the club.’
GOING CONTINENTAL ‘This picture was taken in Gerlingen, which is just outside Stuttgart. Behind my car is the Standard Nine of the Bosch apprentice who had come to the UK the previous year.’
TIME FOR SOME TLC ‘When I came to fettle the car in 1970, much of the work was done in this Birmingham lock-up. There was no electricity, so I had to work in the evenings by the light of a tilly lamp.’
GOING HOME ‘The supplying dealer for the Ten, way back in 1934, was Prideaux Austin in Barnstaple. I drove the car back there to find that the dealership is still there – but now selling Škodas.’
ENJOYING A DRIVE ‘I live near Hanbury Hall in Worcestershire. It’s a National Trust property that puts on a fete each year and is the perfect backdrop for the Austin.’
