VOLKSWAGEN TYPE 2 T1 (1950-67)
TOTAL MADE 1,900,000
The idea for the Transporter van came from a 1947 sketch based on an internal works runabout at VW’s Wolfsburg factory. Initial versions were the panel van and Kombi (with windows and removable middle and rear seats). The van’s 750kg payload instantly impressed commercial users.
Originally designated the Type 2, to differentiate it from the Type 1 Beetle, the T1 title was added retrospectively after further models were introduced.
A classic example of a ‘forward control’ vehicle, where the driver sits over the front driving wheels, the air-cooled engine remained at the back during its evolution, with the split-screen front windows and vee styling defining its character.
T1 production ended in Hanover, Germany, in 1967 but continued in Brazil until 1975.
