1962 AUSTIN-HEALEY SPRITE MkII
There’s more to our decision to include this Sprite as one of our four highlights than just it being the most affordable Sixties entry in the SA-30 collection – for one thing, it’s a MkII, introduced in 1961 as the replacement for the original ‘Frogeye’, so it looks more svelte, with headlamps incorporated into the wings. And for another, it has a boot, more interior space and closer gear ratios and engine improvements (including a high-lift camshaft and larger 1¼ twin HS2 SU carbs) improve driveability. Yet, in spite of all this, the ‘Frogeye’ remains more sought-after, usually commanding prices that are twice those of the MkII.
The main reason we decided to include the bargain Sprite in our selection, though is that, much like the Mini (see page 55), it’s a hoot to drive.
Silverstone Auctions understands that this left-hooker – which underwent major restoration in the US – has been fitted with flat-top pistons and a 1098cc cylinder head. This would certainly explain the throttle response and willingness to rev hard; rather than feeling overstretched, the engine in this one seems to deliver most of its go above 5000rpm.
There’s still the characteristic rasping exhaust note, though, and much like the Mini, cornering is flat and the rackand-pinion steering is both direct and razor sharp.
There’s also just something about the combination of the Iris Blue paintwork with dark blue dashboard and seats (all of which are free from blemishes) that really makes you smile.
