1967 JAGUAR S-TYPE 3.4
It says a lot about this particular S-type that it was able to draw our attention away from the other pair of Jaguars that feature in the SA-30 collection – both impressively original, early flatfour E-types; one a coupé, the other a roadster – but its condition really is something to behold.
Introduced in 1963 to slot between the Mk2 and the larger MkX, the S-type shares the latter’s independent rear suspension but retains all the hallmarks of Jaguar’s game- changing compact saloon. An all- syncho gearbox became standard in 1965 (the same as fitted to the car we’re driving here), which was a major step up from the occasionally temperamental outgoing Moss ‘box. This S-type is also fitted with an AdWest power steering system – a popular option at the time.
Sold as an original UK car, this particular S-type was treated to a bare metal re-paint in 1999 when it was finished in its stunning shade of Opalescent Dark Blue, which complements the red upholstery and faultless walnut facia and door cappings inside beautifully.
It’s completely serene on the move. Even with the smaller 3.4-litre engine, the XK ‘six’ never feels overworked; power delivery is almost turbine- smooth. But it’s the ride that characterises this S-type the most; it’s notably softer than the Mk2 and occupants are left blissfully unaware of such imperfections even over uneven ground. It’s both refined and incredibly relaxing to drive.
