Historics is to feature the late Sir Stirling Moss’ Peugeot 205 GTI in its 26 September auction. The 1987 ‘Phase 1’ car is an early 1.9 and has the first design of dashboard fitted to the model, similar to the contemporary 305.

A more desirable non-sunroof car, it is guided at £13-15k; the car retains Sir Stirling’s British Racing Drivers’ Club sticker and the tow bar he had fitted to transport his motorbike.

Historics felt that the car’s provenance would have a bearing on its value. Its auction negotiator, James Good, said: ‘The Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 is well and truly on a pedestal on the modern classics desirability stakes. And how many are you likely to come across that have been owned and enjoyed by the likes of Sir Stirling Moss? This is unique provenance with a capital “P” for his legion of followers. We sold a similar example without such illustrious ownership at our last sale in July for £12,500, and a low mileage 1.6 litre soared to over £19,000 at our March sale.’

The 205’s history file includes DVLA confirmation of the ‘7 SM’ cherished registration number that it used to wear, previous magazine articles and a letter from Sir Stirling’s son, Elliot, about his memories of learning to drive in the car when it was in family ownership. The 137,200mile 205 has an MoT until 26 August next year.

Peugeot Sport Club UK’s PR and marketing officer, Chris Hughes, said: ‘The estimate may even be a little on the low side with the provenience of the previous owner and the magazine features. We hope that the new owner doesn’t squirrel it away and that we will see it at our Peugeot Festival next year and for years to come.’

Club Peugeot UK chairman, Ian Kirkwood, said: ‘Original, early, low mileage 205 GTI 1.9s are very desirable. It’s a very early car, it’s a standard car and it’s got [Sir Stirling Moss’] name associated with it. The downside is that it’s done 137,000-odd miles, so it’s not exactly a desirable mileage. Somebody’s got to really want that car and leave it as standard as they possibly can, backed up with its decent MoT history to show that it’s never been apart.’
