5 WAYS TO MAKE IT BETTER
1 FIT A SPORTS EXHAUST
It’s up for debate whether a Bentley’s exhaust should be noisy, but the standard setup – and the catalysed system especially – is fairly restrictive. Independent Bentley Service Manchester has a range of aftermarket exhaust systems for the Turbo R, as well as the ECU re-maps needed to prevent fault codes.
2 CHANGE THE LIGHTS
Though decent by the standards of the early Eighties, lighting tech has moved on since the debut of the Turbo R, which is why halogen headlamp units, complete with modern reflectors, are available for the car. Expect to pay around £150 to replace all four lights.
3 FIT BIGGER WHEELS
Most Turbo Rs were fitted with 15-inch alloy wheels but 17-inch alloys were fitted to some variants, including the RT. Though pricey, these will allow fitment of lower profile tyres, reducing some of the roll in the corners – though of course making the ride slightly harsher.
4 SWAP THE BRAKES
From 1997, Turbo Rs were fitted with the ‘big brake’ package that debuted in the Continental T.
This can easily be retro-fitted to older models, which though not short on stopping power, aren’t quite up to modern standards and can suffer from fade after hard use.
5 SWITCH THE GRILLE
Purists will dispute whether they make the car look better, of course, but mesh and laser-cut grille patterns are available from Flying Spares to replace the standard chrome bars, if you’d like something a bit sportier looking.
