How specialists rescued my Triumph
After many years of pretty much troublefree ownership, my 1971 2.5 PI started to run rather off colour. The classicfriendly garage that normally looks after it did all that it could but had the grace to admit that their knowledge did not extend to sorting out a 1970s mechanical petrol injection and advised that it really needed a specialist.
I had come across Anglia Triumph Services some years back from an advert placed in CCW, and proprietor David Aspinall traced the issue to a lack of pressure from the original Lucas fuel pump – which was re-built some years back – and replaced it with a Bosch unit.
This solved the issue for a while, the car ran better, but it started to run extremely rich several months later, with black smoke and a voracious appetite for super unleaded. Back it went and the diagnosis this time was that the original metering unit had finally succumbed to the dreaded ethanol scourge.
David ordered a new unit and fitted this only to find that the pressure relief valve was also playing up so an extended stay ensued and at the same time I asked him to convert it to electronic ignition. When I arrived to pick up the car, we noticed that there was a tiny leak in the radiator; fortunately David had a spare that he could send off to be re-cored.
The car now runs and goes better than it has ever done and all I can say is that David at Anglia Triumph Services has on each occasion charged me less for all parts used than I could have bought them for – very fair indeed, not to mention a very reasonable labour rate. Most of all, the years and years of experience and acquired expertise that money just can’t buy.
If you need a marque expert in the East Anglia area, I cannot recommend them enough.

Great to hear that your Triumph’s running healthily again, Scott. Specialists are the lifeblood of our hobby, and I’d appeal for CCW readers to share their experiences (good and bad) with us – Ed.
