LOSE YOURSELF IN 1985
TITANIC DISCOVERY
One of the greatest maritime mysteries was solved when the wreck of the RMS
Titanic was discovered in September, more than 70 years after it sank in 1912. An expedition led by Robert Ballard used the newlydeveloped technology of a deep-sea vehicle named
Argo, with a robot called
Jason attached that could probe the ocean floor. Remains were spotted at 12.48am on Sunday 1 September, including a boiler similar to that installed on Titanic. Following the debris field led to the main wreck, confirming that the ship had indeed broken in two and that there was no chance of salvaging it.
ARNIE’S KILLTASTIC BLOCKBUSTER
The premise is simple, even by Eighties standards – the daughter of retired army man, John Matrix (played by Schwarzenegger) is kidnapped and dad embarks upon a one-man war to get her back. The film contains a wellknown continuity error following a car chase scene between a Sunbeam Alpine and a Porsche
911 Targa, whereby Matrix abandons the Alpine and transfers over to the Porsche. The Porsche suffered extensive damage when the Alpine rammed it off the road and on to its side – which disappeared when Arnie tipped it back on to its wheels. Oops…
BYE BYE RED BOXES
In January, British Telecom announced that it was to begin phasing out the 77,000 traditional red telephone boxes to much public outcry. These K-series boxes, which could trace their origins back to the original model designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1924, were often sold off, but those in rural locations were generally left because it simply wasn’t worth the financial bother of getting rid of them. What’s more, local authorities secured listed status for around 2000 of these boxes. Around 11,000 survive today, often as ‘ironic’ garden ornaments.
