HOW LONG HAVE YOU OWNED THE CAR?
Since June 2018. I bought it unseen from a gentleman in Glasgow. He was an aficionado who didn’t want to sell it to a dealer. He was good enough to trailer it down to Lincolnshire on the understanding that I’d buy it if I liked it. Well, since my first car back in 1990 was a Cosmos Blue Scirocco 1.6 GL auto, I absolutely fell head-overheels for this very clean Diamond Silver Metallic version at a very reasonable £3600.
HOW MUCH HISTORY?
I have the original bill of sale from a Mrs Reays of Ugley Hall Farm, Bishops Stortford, on 1 April 1983. MoT certificates are present from 2009; preceding history was sadly lost after Mrs Reays’ passing, when she left JWC 56Y to her nephew. VW Classic Parts sent me the original
build certificate for the car with a manufacture date of 5 November 1982 and a delivery date via Sheerness Port of 11 November 1982.
HAS IT BEEN MODIFIED?
The only change is the obligatory Weber carburettor ‘upgrade’. The original and misunderstood Pierburg 2B5 was in a box in the boot, though; I’m having it refurbished and re-fitted by Bromyard VW.
WHAT’S LEFT TO DO ON IT?
Not much at all. I refurbished the original alloy wheels, bought new-old-stock Wolfsburg mudflaps and side trim and added a periodcorrect Blaupunkt London MR21 radio/cassette deck, bought from a chap in Latvia on eBay. My old Scirocco had the exact same unit. I have the car insured for £3600. Should I reconsider this value?
