Mazda revives MX-5 parts

More than 150 spares produced in new factory-backed programme – but clubs want body panels too

-

Mazda has announced an official restoration parts programme to help owners of the MX-5 MkI (NA) in Europe and North America.

A total of 156 right-hand-drive parts and 117 left-hand-drive components will be available through the service, including Enkei alloy wheels, brake calipers, new and improved hood fixings, and trim. These parts will be available through Mazda Motors UK’s authorised repairer network.

Ian Fleming, general manager of the MX-5 Owners’ Club, said that the club was ‘really delighted to see discontinued part lines back in production’, but wanted the restoration parts programme to make body panels available too.

‘While it’s still possible to buy limited stocks of new old stock, it would be great to see old pressings up and running again making front wings, rear quarters and sill sections. MX-5 NAs are becoming valuable and people are looking after and preserving them.’

The restoration parts programme is a spin of the NA Roadster Restore service offered in Japan since 2017; there, owners can take their MX-5 (known in Japan as the Eunos Roadster) back to Mazda’s Hiroshima factory for a complete nutand-bolt restoration. This offer will not be extended to European and North American owners at the moment.

A Mazda spokesperson said: ‘ There are no plans to bring his service to Europe, as a big part of its appeal in Japan is that the cars are restored at the factory in Hiroshima and that’s clearly something that would make offering the service in Europe very costly.’
