The full story of a remarkable MG with six miles on the clock

As-new saloon sold during MG Rover’s collapse and near-perfectly preserved could be yours for £12k

-

An MG ZT with just six miles on the clock – and just recently given its first-ever MoT - is going under the hammer next month.

Classic Car Auctions is selling the 2004 ZT 160, estimated to fetch between £12-15k, in its live online auction on 12 December. The showroom condition saloon last changed ownership in 2016, when the car’s original owner sold it at a previous CCA auction for £12,100. The then vendor had purchased the car at half price in 2005 from a stock clearance sale of an MG Rover dealer in Derby, following the collapse of the company.

The car was sold by the dealer with just one mile on its own odometer, and it has covered five miles since then, being stored in a heated garage and dehumidified chamber. It received its first ever MoT prior to the sale and is described by the vendor as ‘exactly how it left the Longbridge factory’.

CCW contributor and MG Rover expert Keith Adams said: ‘The MG ZT and Rover 75 sister car both have an enthusiastic and growing following. This is enough to guarantee its elevation into classic status sooner rather than later – and some would say it’s already there. This ZT is a very nice example and unique for its lowmileage status.

‘I’m sure it will reach its lower estimate and I am rather hoping that whoever buys it actually uses it – stick 20,000 miles on that car, and it’ll still be an exceptionally low-mileage Condition 1 example – rather than a slightly freaky museum exhibit.’
