Chrysler Crossfire

This thing really shifts, but just wait until the yowling Mercedes-Benz V6 sneaks above 2500rpm because that’s where the power really kicks in. You almost feel embedded in the car as you sit down low. There’s a slick six-speed gearbox and a light enough clutch. This feels a fine example of the breed, and has obviously been beautifully maintained. The steering, which never won rave reviews, feels fine on this car, and a quick run along an empty, twisty road caused no moments of fear – though we aren’t pretending to press it anywhere close to the limit. In fact, this car really inspires confidence and is very exhilarating to drive, but just keep an eye on that speedo!

BODYWORK CHECK

It’s easy to admire this modern classic with its truly immaculate paint and chromework. This is certainly no flimsy, cheap American coupé. The Crossfire was actually built in Germany by Karmann, and it shows. The bodywork is pristine, and we could find nothing of any significance to report. All is just about as it left the factory, right down to the massive wheels. The superb boat tail effect at the rear of the car is complemented by a large spoiler – all is in excellent condition, including the glass and window rubbers.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

Here is a place of true greatness, though there are recognisable Mercedes parts, such as some of the instruments (of which there are many!). The cockpit as a whole is in fantastic condition – the seats are like new and the same goes for the carpets, headlining and door trims. It’s all nice and spacious (for two people) in here and there’s an air of well-preserved luxury. All of the electrics, including the electric windows and cruise control, are working correctly.

UNDER THE BONNET

Again, all is well. Everything is clean, right down to the fluids, there are absolutely no leaks to report and the engine is running beautifully. The transmission appears fault-free and the steering feels exactly as a Crossfire should feel. The overall condition is reflected in the extensive service history. Previous MoTs show that the car has seen limited use of approximately 2000 miles per year over the past five years, with recent work including new track rod ball joints.

THE CCW VIEW

This is a truly superb example of the Chrysler Crossfire, a car to melt the most ardent anti-motorist’s heart. It’s an incredible machine on so many levels – a concept car that made it to prduction. It was also built from highquality components. We reckon this car is superb for the money. Just look at the performance figures and those wonderful looks.

PROS Rare, beautiful, great performance CONS Not ideal for a growing family
