Starting requires minimal choke, while gears on the column change are selected with ease, the clutch biting at just under half travel. Ample torque allows for low revs in traffic, although the V4 is comfortable being pushed and cruises nicely at motorway speeds. The steering offers plenty of feedback, although the wheel sits slightly offcentre. The sliding pillar suspension still performs well today and produces a firm ride, with acceptable body roll. The recently overhauled drum brakes feel impressive.

BODYWORK CHECK

This 20-year-old paint has some micro blisters on small sections of the nearside panels, and off-side front wing. That same wing also features a couple of chips above the wheel arch, while the alloy bonnet has a similar issue on its front edge. Underneath, this ex-South African example looks totally solid and well protected, with recent underseal. The chrome appears largely original, both bumpers showing some age but nothing excessive, while the rather exclusive Carello spotlights enhance the front.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

Heavy investment has been made in here, including many upgrades to enhance the classic rally experience that the vendor enjoys. Replacing the front bench required a pair of period Morris Minor seats to be re-covered, matching the existing trim perfectly, with bespoke floor- and roofmounted safety belts. New rubber mats and carpets are not a sacrifice to rallying but original equipment. Brantz Pro timing gear with period stop watches, map light and compass have been installed, with a floor-mounted fire extinguisher. Dials include the original and very stylish speedo, plus a pod-mounted Smiths rev counter; everything worked when tested.

UNDER THE BONNET

Perfect presentation includes correct black crinkle finish on the engine covers, plus a refurbished radiator. The ignition system has been renewed, with an additional coil, and the manual fuel pump has received an electric back-up unit. Most parts of the drivetrain have been refurbished or uprated, including alternator, Weber carb and vintage air horns. The history file consists of import papers with invoices and MoTs since the Appia arrived from South Africa in 2003, the mileage then 14,675. There are also owner and workshop manuals, and a finisher’s medal for the 1962 Acropolis rally.

THE CCW VIEW

This Appia pays homage to one that finished 25th in the 1962 Acropolis Rally, but all its alterations can be reversed. What this car promises is a warm welcome at classic rallies. It’s very rare and ready to perform.

PROS Rust-free, rare, mechanically correct CONS Paint blemishes, not one for the purists
