MASSIVE MODEL COLLECTION OFFERED
3000 die-cast promotional toys to be auctioned off in early December
Acollector of commercial vehicle models has decided to sell his cache of more than 3000 toys across a three-day Charterhouse auction (3-5 December).
Lledo models make up the majority of the haul – many of which were limited edition items made in short runs to promote businesses and bands. All mint, they cost the collector from £8 to £220 each; at auction, they will be sold without reserve.
Founder, auctioneer and valuer at Charterhouse, Richard Bromell, said: ‘The models were collected by the owner and his wife over many years. Working in the aviation industry he often travelled for business and was known to spend some of his time abroad looking out for models he was not able to source at home in the pre-internet era.’
Classic Car Weekly’s automobilia guru, David Brown, said that the collection would attract Lledo enthusiasts keen to start or add to their collection during lockdown.
‘This huge collection takes you back to the heady days when toy swap meets were a regular feature throughout the country and the pages of the original Collectors Gazette was full of ads and announcements about ‘new’ promotional vehicles,’ he said.
‘All manner of companies and visitor attractions were displayed on the side of die-cast models that didn’t necessarily have any connection with the company being promoted. People used to collect them in their hundreds, as is the case here. If you missed out, this is a vast quantity to cherish and display.’ ] charterhouse-auction. com
