Rover 200 (R8)

Poor old things. Underappreciated, often tatty and just a bit too humdrum to stand out above their German rivals. These Nineties steeds have wallowed in the doldrums for half of their existence. If a car can epitomise the Festival of the Unexceptional, surely it’s a Rover 214 saloon.

Hang on, though – the tides have turned, the fan base has mobilised and suddenly these onceubiquitous crumbling runabouts are becoming rarer and a bit special.

The R8 is a legitimate target thanks to its lovely driving characteristics, simple comfort and fine choice of engines. Quality issues aside, these are genuinely good cars and many owners will testify to their impressive reliability and low running costs, if properly maintained, which minimises the risk to your investment.

Bag a ‘Tomcat’ Coupé – and especially the very rare FDHplated cars – and you’ve something properly cool on your hands, especially if you go for the slightly unhinged Turbo with its near200bhp powerplant. However, there are enthusiasts out there for most of the range.

Although no 200 will ever reach BMW E30 levels of collectability, their appeal is on the rise and that’s good news for your wallet. The key is finding a solid runner that isn’t overdue some attention. The bad news is that it isn’t easy…

Looking for a practical and affordable classic that won’t run away with your cash? Here’s why you should consider the ‘R8’ Rover 200
