This Vogue starts on the first turn of the ignition with just a dab of choke, registering a healthy 50psi oil pressure. The steering demands some effort at parking speeds but lightens and delivers good feedback once underway. The suspension copes with all but the worst surfaces and the brakes perform well with a firm pedal. The new clutch operates smoothly, biting just under half travel, though gear selection should be approached leisurely. This example also benefits from overdrive on third and fourth gears, allowing for comfortable 60mph cruising.
BODYWORK CHECK
The car was re-sprayed in French Olive Green in 2019, a colour that complements the original green interior. The underside appears to be in good order, with little evidence of serious repairs and a uniform coating of protection. The sill panels are solid, though there’s one paint chip in the driver’s door aperture. Two spots are apparent on the bonnet with other blemishes on the offside rear quarter panel and nearside front door. The door and windscreen rubbers are recent replacements. The patina to the original chrome bumpers, grille and light surrounds combines nicely with the rest of the car’s condition.
HOW’S THE INTERIOR?
Positioning the handbrake on the right allows for wider front seats, which offer a good level of comfort while the rear bench features a small repair patch to the offside edge. The red carpet is a later addition – it does the job, but original green flooring would be preferable. Door panels are complete but tired and feature attractive wood inserts that are heavily varnished, likewise the dash fascia with an aged veneer finish. The dash top covering has age-related cracks and the instrument binnacle is a recent replacement. The original speedometer failed, but comes with the car to verify mileage. All switchgear and gauges operate as they should.
UNDER THE BONNET
The chrome K&N air filter looks like a recent replacement and the clutch master cylinder, temperature sensor, ignition and oil filter show little signs of age. The engine bay paint is free from blemishes or corrosion and the block shows no evidence of fluid leaks. The history file contains the original bill of sale at £1026. 13s. 0d and old MoT certificates dating back to 1987. The V5 confirms single custodianship for 43 years.
THE CCW VIEW
Classic estates are an uncommon sight at shows and this one would suit a hands-on enthusiast, willing to tackle interior improvements. Described accurately by the vendor as ‘honest’, this rare Singer will certainly turn heads.
