RICHARD BARNETT’S WEEK OF LOOKING AT THE MARKET

THURSDAY

I’ve been looking at H&H Classics’ forthcoming Duxford sale and it takes me back to when lockdown was announced and the auctioneer had to act quickly to enable the sale to go ahead. Here we are, 12 months on, and there are some wonderful cars in the 14 April sale including a 1942 Ford WOA2 ‘heavy utility car’ that has been restored in the colours of the 21st Army Group. As H&H points out, de-commissioned examples had a hard life after the war with some even entered in stock car racing events. Luckily this example was restored. It’s estimated at £25k-35k.

FRIDAY

Brightwells is putting the finishing touches to its next sale and a flurry of late entries has added more spice to an already exciting line-up. Among the sports cars offered is a 1964 Triumph TR4A IRS that has had a five-years restoration. Not only that, it has history dating back to the 1960s. Better still, it’s white and sits on steel wheels, so it looks better than the run-of-the-mill, redwith-chrome-wires models which we, as enthusiasts, are expected to like. Well, not all of us do, so if you fancy this example, it has a £16k-£19k estimate.

SATURDAY

MPH’s first sale of the year was held today. First things first: It’s good to see an auctioneer get its results up quickly and while some auctioneers do, others don’t. Getting away from that, MPH hit the ground running but with the choice on offer that was to be expected. One car really took my fancy – a super-early, low-mileage BL Mini Clubman 1275GT that had been restored three years ago. Pleasingly it was re-painted in the original Antelope colour, rather than being subjected to a more 1970s hue, and it had a set of period-correct Dunlop alloy wheels. An utter gem, that was good enough to make £20,250.
