GOODWOOD REMEMBERS SIR STIRLING MOSS
Memorials to take centre stage at 2021 Festival of Speed and Revival
Goodwood is to bring together the cars behind Sir Stirling Moss’ greatest success – including his Mille Miglia-winning Mercedes SLR – as part of a series of events celebrating him this year.
The special exhibitions and parades take place during the Festival of Speed (8-11 July) and Revival (17-19 September). Mercedes-Benz is bringing Moss’ 1955 Mille Miglia-winning 300SLR ‘722’ to the former event, along with the W196 F1 car in which Moss won that year’s Aintree Grand Prix.
COVID regulations initially prevented a parade tribute to Moss, who died last April, but a cavalcade of cars that he raced during his career will be gathered.
The 300SLR ‘722’ will be there, with the Ferrari ‘Sharknose’-killing Lotus 18 that Sir Stirling raced at Monaco and the Nürburgring in 1961, as well the Ferrari 250 GT SWB that he drove to his last Goodwood win at the ‘61 Tourist Trophy.
Other parade cars from Moss’ racing life will take to the grid in trophy races; his Aston Martin DB3S and DBR1 will appear in the Freddie March Memorial and Sussex Trophies, respectively, alongside his Reims-winning Jaguar C-type. Moss’ Ferguson P99, pictured, and Cooper T40 will take part in the Richmond Trophy.
The Kinrara Trophy, re-named the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy last year, returns for this year’s Revival as a permanent fixture; it will also run in the 16-17 October 78th Members’ Meeting.
Festival of Speed and Revival founder, The Duke of Richmond, said: ‘Stirling and his wife Susie were such an important part of the Goodwood family. All of us here felt his loss especially keenly as we weren’t able to commemorate his incredible life as we would have wanted last year.
‘We hope that fans at our events will join us in celebrating his racing career and bidding farewell to “Mr Goodwood”. Stirling’s supreme skill will continue to be remembered at Goodwood for many years to come.’ goodwood.com
