Strong demand for Fords, MGs and other everyday classics evident at latest ACA sale

-

ACA’s two-day online sale recalled the pre-lockdown blockbuster days, where a packed hall saw most cars selling under the hammer.

As with its most recent sales, there were no crowds and no in-the-room bidding frenzies, but punters were clearly comfortable bidding online and more than ready to stump up the readies for a thoroughly decent selection of heartland classics.

Top price of the May Bank Holiday weekend sale was the £167,400 paid for a 1962 Aston Martin Lagonda Rapide, its price eclipsing the £126,900 that bought a 2016 Lamborghini Huracán.

A low-mileage 1995 Jaguar XJS 4.0 Celebration sold for £28,080, making it the dearest Jaguar of the weekend. A 1964 220SE cabriolet that made £50,760, was the priciest Mercedes-Benz sold, while a 1967 250SE went well beyond its £20004000 upper estimate to a vendordelighting £8640. BMW-wise, a 1987 M3 in limited edition Johnny Cecotto form was away for £61,020 and a 1987 M635CSi went to a new owner at £52,920.

The market still has a keen interest in fast Fords and prices remain buoyant, as a 1991 Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 at £22,680 proved – a 1989 XR4x4, by contrast, cost £5400 and a same-year Sierra GLSi 4x4 £3780.

Those after a more traditional classic didn’t miss out, as a selection of Morris Minors showed. A 1955 four-door sold made £3510 and a 1962 Traveller £7560, while those who prefer their Morris models older might have found the 1935 8 (£4320) to their liking.

A selection of MG Midgets and ’Bs catered for the mass market with a 1971 Midget making £3750 and a brace of 1972 round wheelarch examples in varying condition making £3240 and £7020. Also in the MG line-up was a much decomposed 1970 ’CGT that had been stored in a container since 1981 but still managed to prise £4050 out of one punter’s bank account.
