Bangers and Cash: Restoring Classics to be shown on TV later this year
Classic Car Weekly can exclusively reveal that a new two-part Bangers and Cash spin-off is set to head to our screens in the near future. TV channel, Yesterday (UKTV), has also confirmed that a fifth season of Bangers and Cash will air in January 2022.
Meanwhile, Bangers and Cash: Restoring Classics will go further than Mathewsons’ auction hall. The chosen cars – including a Vauxhall Astra, MG Montego Turbo and a Lotus Elan S1 – will be followed out of the sale room and into the repair bay before their restoration and eventual re-sale back at Mathewsons. Commentary from the entire Mathewsons crew – Derek, Paul and Dave – is to be expected, as they attempt repairs on some of the cheaper vehicles in the auction fleet themselves.
Founder and owner of Mathewsons, Derek Mathewson, said: ‘Well, they’re buying some interesting stuff! But I think it’s going to do brilliant. And the reason for that is that it’s genuine. People can tell when something’s not genuine. They say to us, “you’re just like on the programme, we can tell you’re not actors.” People can relate to it and it’s the same with this.
‘It’ll be interesting, the trials and tribulations they’ll encounter. Not with the cars so much, but with the restorers. I’ve tried to tell them – deadlines aren’t going to be met, quotes aren’t going to be met. But it’s difficult to tell people they’re doing it wrong.
‘And rather them than me, to be honest. We’re not geared up for it ourselves and we’re a bit restored out! The three of us have all had our own cars that we’ve worked on in some shape or form, some from scratch and that, but we’re too busy for it, now. But I’m pleased that other people are getting involved.’
