CLASSICS POWER UP SOUTHPORT PROM

New event evokes the original Speed Trials’ spirit

-

More than 200 classics have taken part in a new show in Southport to mark the resort’s motoring history. The Classic and Speed Show, held in Victoria Park on Sunday 10 October, included a celebration of motoring pioneer Dorothy Levitt’s class win in the Southport Speed Trials of 1903. Notable entries included the first production Bristol 400, in its first public show appearance in five years, while the oldest classic, an 1899 Hurtu, took part in parades around Southport’s town centre.

Aintree Circuit Club, which organised the event, is now planning a follow-up show for September next year following a warm reception from classic fans.

Chairman, Mike Ashcroft, said: ‘The event exceeded all expectations. A world class entry including Pebble Beach winners, covering three centuries of motoring with great weather bringing in a constant stream of visitors from all age groups. It was a great family day out.

‘Big thanks to Victoria Park Events, Sefton Council, Motorsport UK, Cataclean, Porsche Centre Preston, all the volunteer officials and marshals for their help and assistance and finally, the fantastic support from participants, many travelling the length and breadth of the UK.’

The event also included judging from a panel of classic experts, including specific prizes awarded for Rolls-Royces, Bentleys and Jaguar E-types.

John Dickenson, who won the event’s prize for best 1966-90 classic with his 1968 Wolseley Hornet, said: ‘I think it’s an excellent show, and what Southport has needed for a long time. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event.’
