‘The 1.0-litre turbo engine’s 75bhp is ample in a car that weighs just 810kg’

The Figaro has quite a presence in this country for a car that was in production for less than a year and never officially sold in the UK. ‘Grey’ imports began when the Figaro was still in its prime and it’s now estimated that up to 10 per cent of the 20,000 built have since been shipped here. Interestingly, though, the last five years have seen some of the best examples leaving these shores for the USA, where demand is even higher.

Such demand means that the days of the bargain-priced immaculate Figaro are behind us, but this retro-looking cutie still offers decent value compared with many a period classic. And, of course, it’s very practical, whether you’re looking for an everyday runabout or a show car. The turbocharged 1.0-litre MA10ET engine provides 75bhp (ample in a car that weighs just 810kg) while the Figaro’s three-speed automatic transmission and standard-fit power steering make it easy to drive and ideal for the urban grind. It’s also good fun with decent frontwheel-drive handling for those B-road antics.

Figaro buyers adore the car’s Fiftiesinfluenced styling, which features both inside and out, while the fulllength sunroof provides open-air motoring when the weather’s fine. Just as importantly, however, the Figaro offers excellent fuel economy as well as impressive reliability when well-maintained.

Back-up from a choice of independent specialists helps the ownership experience, with service items and most mechanicals being reasonably priced. Naturally, though, there’s plenty for any prospective owner to check before taking the plunge.
