5 WAYS TO MAKE IT BETTER

-

1 CHANGE THE COGS

Despite being listed on the original pre-launch promotional material, overdrive was never offered on the SP250, even as an option. It’s become a popular addition since, however, and the Laycock de Normanville units found on contemporary Triumphs are a relatively easy fit. A less period-correct option is slotting in a five-speed transmission though this is typically a more bespoke option that’ll need adapting elements to make it fit.

2 SORT OUT THE STEERING

The steering box fitted to the ‘Dart’ in period was fairly standard when it came to feel and feedback though against younger sports cars, even those from the 1960s, feel tauter. Equally, the old steering box can feel very heavy, especially at low speeds, when it’s trying to turn heavier radial tyres. Swapping a rackand-pinion system into an SP250 is commonplace with Triumph Spitfire units generally favoured.

3 BOOST THE DAMPERS

The rear set-up of lever-arm dampers just aren’t as good as modern telescopic units, which, let’s not forget, the Daimler uses at the front. Converting the rear to telescopics can be done but requires a bit of jiggery-pokery. Robert Grinter Restorations offers a kit that aids in the process for a reasonable £425.

4 ADD A BRAKE SERVO

The SP250’S brakes offer decent function and feel but can be a bit heavy so many owners fit a servo. The engine bay is tight so placement requires creativity. A common spot is at the front between the radiator and the grille, off to one side.

5 FIT AN ALTERNATOR

A few SP250S, notably the cars supplied to the police, were fitted with alternators, but most stuck with dynamos, which struggle to provide power at low revs. You only need to fit a few electrical modifications, like a 12v accessory outlet or upgraded headlamps, to realise that the dynamo doesn’t cut it when you reach your first traffic jam. Alternators fitted to the Daimler 250 V8 saloon are a good fit and parts are easy enough to come by.
