KNOW WHERE THEY ROT

Plastic panels and a Tridion frame suggest a car with no rust issues, but many su er from extensive component rust. The frame isn’t galvanised, either, so rust can take hold from leaking batteries (front passenger footwell), damp and damage, all hidden by plastic cladding. Repairs must be of a high standard because the safety of the car relies on it.

IS IT MISFIRING?

The six spark plugs are ddly rather than dicult to change but can cause serious problems if neglected. Look for evidence of a plug change from a specialist and check the condition of the leads. Engine wear is common over 60,000 miles, but the power pack is straightfo­rward to remove. In 2002 displaceme­nt of the higher power models was increased to 698cc and a 799cc turbo diesel was added.

HAVE A LOOK INSIDE

Low-quality interior trim guarantees challenges, so carefully inspect the whole cabin before you buy. The carpet has a habit of falling apart, but fortunatel­y it’s a one-piece item and replacemen­ts can be bought for as little as £150. Split seat trim is also a fact of life for X1/9 owners – especially on the driver’s side. The seat material on early 1300 cars isn’t very hard-wearing and the vinyl on early 1500 models can crack badly, while the later cars got tougher cloth and good-quality black and red leather. Unfortunat­ely the Alcantara of the Gran Finale edition doesn’t wear well, so check it.

SEE HOW IT SHIFTS

The most common failures relate to the gearbox control system. Changes aren’t fast, but should be smooth – if the shifts are violent or noisy when you drive gently, the clutch actuator or control system will need repair. Listen for gearbox whine because Smart didn’t specify oil change intervals.

CHECK THE SUSPENSION

Original Smarts have a transverse leaf spring at the front up to the MKIII. The 2000-on MKIV went over to a coil-sprung Macpherson strut set-up, which all right-hand drive Smarts have. Leaf-sprung cars have better ride and handling and the setup is generally robust, whereas coil sprung cars su er broken coils. Problems with bushes or droplinks will be obvious because everything is so close to the driver!
