The classic car market has gone mad

-

I couldn’t agree more with Quentin Willson’s warning (The Insiders, June 2017) of an overheated market for third-rate classic car tat.

It applies to good-quality mainstream classics as well. Ultra-rare, historic and beautiful cars deserve top money but over £30k for a privately offered MGB or TR4?

I have just reached the ranks of the retired with a pot of money to last for the rest of my life and the last thing I will be doing is sinking a shedload of it into an old car, so for the first time in 25 years I don’t have a classic in my garage. I would like one but I just can’t bring myself to compete for overpriced cars. I have decided to sit it out to see what happens.

I may well be kicking myself in a year or two when that TR4 I would like hits £50k but maybe I will be buying it for half that, meaning someone will have caught a cold – and that won’t do the market any good.

I sold a really nice Aston DB6 in 2008 for £63,000 but sadly only the seriously wealthy can now buy these cars. I used to take it to shows and it wouldn’t be alone. Now you hardly ever see one.

All markets adjust from time to time and this will occur in the classic car market. It’s just a question of when and by how much. Richard Senior
