Tempting Buys
Picks of the auction market from both sides of the Atlantic – Porsche 356, Ford Mustang, Jaguar XJS and Fiat 8V
1953 Porsche 356 1500
For sale at Gooding & Co, Pebble Beach, August 16, goodingco.com Why buy it? There can be few better examples of an early ‘bent-screen’ pre-a 356 about. Treated to a concours-winning restoration in what has to be the best colour for one of these, it also has the preferred – as in most powerful – 1488cc engine. Expect it to push close to £200k on the day. Estimate tba
1991 Jaguar XJ-S Le Mans
For sale at Classic Car Auctions, Leamington Spa, August 3, classiccarauctions.co.uk Why buy it? Jaguar built 280 of these to celebrate its Le Mans victories in 1988 and ’90, and quality survivors are hard to find. This car, no. 223, has just 63,000 miles on it and has also been restored. The TWR bodykit option was fitted from new. Looks a good buy in the suggested price range. Estimate £12k-£14k
1964 Ford Mustang Convertible
For sale at Silverstone Auctions, Northants, July 28, silverstoneauctions.com Why buy it? This is a good-looking early Mustang, made better by being on original wheel covers rather than aftermarket alloys. At anywhere near the low estimate it would leave plenty to spend on detailing the engine bay to match the rest of the car. Estimate £18k-£22k
1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic
For sale at Bonhams, Quail Lodge, California, August 16, bonhams.com/cars Why buy it? If you have the seven-figure entry fee, this Ghia-bodied Supersonic (one of just 15) is dripping with history. First owned by car designer Howard ‘Dutch’ Darrin, he sold it to racer Briggs Cunningham. With the current owner the car appeared at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours. Estimate Refer department
