Ferrari Mondial sliding back towards the dark years?

-

Eighties and Nineties Ferraris have been a casualty of the teetering global economy but you may be surprised to see where certain models seem to be heading. Some pundits say that the average fall is 10% to 12% but I think things are worse. There’s no doubt 308s, 328s and 355s are all down along with Testarossas, 456s and 550s – but Mondials are approaching a slumping milestone.

I know the 2+2 V8 wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea with a lowish price record but Anglia’s nice Rosso Corsa ’82 QV knocked down in June should have made more than its result of just £21,656, including premium. A UK supplied rhd – one of only 152 – it had recent bills for £12k, plus 27 stamps in the book. This feels like the sort of money Mondials were making almost a decade ago when

we snootily dubbed them the poor man’s Ferrari. Right now a carefully cherished Mondial at around £20k still looks a powerful proposition. A trader in Kent has a black ’83 rhd QV with 48k, 20 stamps in the book and specialist invoices for a recent service, tyres and new belts up for £25,995. More surprising still is the private seller in Gloucestershire who has just sold a Rosso Corsa rhd ’82 with 75,000 miles, history file and bills for new belts, service, water pump and front suspension rebuild for only £15,950. That’s cheap, even in the flat current market. There are plenty of sellers in denial still pitching £50k Mondials, but eventually they’ll have to readjust if the want to sell. Watch those small ads because the days of the £20k Ferrari Mondial (and maybe even the £35k 308) could soon be back.
