Classic four-door Rangies have climbing potential

-

Four-door classic Range Rovers are definitely in vogue, if you’ll pardon the pun. Values have been pulled up by the strong prices of early-seventies twodoors but also by a low-ish survival rate. I remember fresh, sensiblemileage four-door Eighties/nineties Vogues feeling expensive at £6k. Many were driven into the ground by owners who couldn’t afford the regular fettling that they needed.

These days any four-door classic Rangie with less than 100k is hot property. Kingsley Cars in Oxfordshire has an ex-japan ’94 3.9SE with 37k miles and full history for £39,995. A private seller in Kent has a ’95 final year, soft-dash 3.9 SE in Beluga Black with 47k miles and full history for £39,950.

Even with mileage they’re not cheap any more. A private seller in Edinburgh has an ’88 SE 3.5, with two owners, 115,000 and needing some paint for £20k, while Graeme Hunt in London has a rare LSE with one owner and 114k miles for £49,750. Mint, low-mileage LSES, CSXS and Overfinches can touch £75k-£100k. But not everybody knows how much classic Rangies have appreciated in the last year. In November last year H&H knocked down a sharp-looking ’90 Vogue 3.9 in red with 72k miles, long-term family ownership and good history file but needing MOT work on the sills for a derisory £5344 – including premium. In September CCA sold a Westminster Grey ’93 Vogue 4.2 LSE with an indicated 103k but no history, needing a headlining, driver’s seat cover and minor detailing for £3774. These two were online auction lockdown bargains, which with some fettling could have increased their market value enough to provide free motoring for a couple of years. Now there’s a thought.
