Keep one, sell one

I have a 1983 V12 XJ-S HE with 100k miles and a 1997 XJ8 3.2 Sport with 72k miles. The XJ8 is immaculate inside and drives beautifully, but the paint needs freshening. The XJS has had a lot of work done and is solid underneath. Which to keep long term and what will the classic market do to them?

David Brothers

I’d keep the XJS and sell the XJ. An HE XJ-S is a desirable thing with a growing following and if it’s mechanically strong should definitely be a keeper. We’re seeing significant movements in early XJ-S values which will pull up HES. As long as you don’t have expensive body, trim or mechanical repairs ahead and can substantiate the mileage with history, this could become a valuable Jaguar.

Which temporary classic?

Delays on new car deliveries mean I’ll have a six-month gap to fill for my daily driver. I’m thinking about something from the Eighties to early 2000s that won’t lose too much money. I do a 50-mile round-trip commute a few times a week; it will be parked outside and budget is up to £10k. It will also be parked at the airport, so reliability is important.

Gavin Clark

I’d look at an Eighties/nineties Mercedes, Saab 900 or 9000, or a Volvo 850/940. These are all strong, rust-resistant and reliable. Go for a lowish mileage Mercedes 190 or W124, give it a monster service and new battery and have plenty of change from £10k.

Was I wise to upgrade?

I’ve just upgraded my 2006 Mercedes R230 SL500 to an R230 SL55AMG, enticed by its hand-built engine and fantastic sound. It’s a late Distronic model with 517bhp. My wife loves the SL, but isn’t convinced about its future desirability or value.

Maxwell Segal

I think you’ll be fine. All years of the SL55 are desirable, and a 2006 is one of the most refined. Fuel and servicing are going to be similar to your 500 and its value is unlikely to wither anytime soon. Keep it well serviced, and try not to rack up too many miles and you should at least get back what you paid. Go out and enjoy that sensational machine!
