2. The Inside Line

There are many books about all sorts of sports but invariably the better ones are by someone who was actually there. Rob Andrews lived the dream of being involved in the 1980s 500cc World Motocross Championship as a serious competitor.

This book, well illustrated with lots of never seen before colour pics, is a fascinating record of what it was like to be involved in GP MX. Rob claims to being an unremarkable amateur who by determination and dedication attained remarkable results including a factory ride for Kawasaki, a GP contender and member of Great Britain’s 1985 Motocross des Nations team.

Inside this 400-page hardback book is the full flavour of what it was like for a lad who just wanted to race MX and by his own admission achieved results far beyond his wildest dreams.

Find out about the racers, the events, the circuits Rob came in contact with in the paddocks and on the circuit during this fascinating time for MX.

Says Rob Andrews: “I feel very fortunate that the best years of my GP racing career coincided with an incredibly memorable period for the 500cc world championship. To be able to share my own experiences of that great time in motocross Grands Prix is equally exciting”.

3. Throttled

Metering the amount of air which an engine gets is a job done by the throttle valve and once it wears out there is no way an engine will carburate properly and no amount of fiddling with the needle position or jetting will make much difference.

The only answer is replacement with a new item. This particular one is for the editor’s Bultaco and fits inside the Amal MK.II Concentric carburettor which the model wears as standard. Amal make a full range of throttle valves and of course other spares for almost every Amal carburettor ever made.

Your handbook will tell you what spec you need. There are two types of valve available, the standard zinc one or the hard anodised version shown here.

What is it? It’s a throttle valve for an Amal MK.II Concentric carburettor.

What’s the cost? Various sizes from £33.69 plus VAT

4. Something for the wall

Even in this day and age of instant electronic images when all sorts of pictures can be printed off, there is something extra special about a hand-crafted piece of bespoke artwork. Take a look at this image which artist Jaxx Lawson did for Stu Clements. Stu is on the left of the artwork on his ex-bernie Schreiber SWM – it was taken at the Bernie Schreiber trials school after the Highland Classic Two day Trial – Jaxx has created something really spectacular and it is produced on aluminium sheet. As pieces such as this are bespoke and produced individually, so pricing is individual to a piece. Contact Jaxx through her facebook page to discuss your requirements.

5. Our panel said…

…get new ones! Hah! Plastics on competition bikes have a hard life. They get hot, cold, covered in mud, bashed when there’s an ‘off,’ dinged with stones through events and – in countries where there is sunshine – baked by the sun. Is it any wonder the poor side panels on our IT465 project crumbled when touched? Luckily, Motoduro had a set in stock and they are now in our workshop and almost on the bike! We’ve gone for the UK spec blue because we like it. There’s all sorts of other things available for the IT from Motoduro and now the project is back on track we’ll be featuring more of their bits in here.

What are they? Side panels for a 1981 IT465 – fits the IT250 from the same era we’re told.

What’s the cost? They’re £59.95 plus a bit of postage, or ring Motoduro and pick them up at Telford.

Where do you get ‘em? From Motoduro, www.motoduro.co.uk 01604 764763
