This is my slightly un­usual 1978 GL1000 which I’ve been work­ing on for about 18 months (aided by my able Col­lie ap­pren­tice Lily). I bought the bike as a re­cent US im­port for around £700 as a non-run­ner, but when it was de­liv­ered it ran beau­ti­fully which was in­cred­i­ble con­sid­er­ing the dif­fi­cul­ties the carbs can give on these mod­els. I’ve stripped down the front calipers and re­placed seals and pads, sourced some drilled discs from a CB750, re­placed the front mas­ter cylin­der and re­stored the rear cylin­der and fit­ted HEL hoses through­out. I fit­ted an oil dip­stick from the States, it’s got new Gates cam-belts along with the twin front lights and LED in­di­ca­tors and the Hagon shocks mean that you can ride the bike and still re­tain one or two of your fill­ings. The stain­less steel ex­hausts look good and sound bril­liant, but per­haps not for Gold Wing purists. I had wanted to splash out and get the Dyna S ig­ni­tion sys­tem fit­ted to help start­ing and per­for­mance but was put off by the cost so it was quite a sur­prise when I took off the con­tact cover to find that it had al­ready been fit­ted. There is still work to do but I hope your read­ers ap­pre­ci­ate a less than stan­dard Gold Wing. Thanks for an ex­cel­lent mag­a­zine.
