Classic Motorcycle Mechanics

I remember it well!

- John Hanlon

Hi, CMM! The August issue (letters) brings back some memories of John Spring’s Rickman Z1000. I bought this bike from DK in 1994 when I lived in the Midlands as one rather tired Rickman Z900. I rebuilt it to look like a Z1000; the tank had to be widened and re-tunneled to fit over the wider Rickman frame. It was painted pearlescent candy red, with unique engine case

coating and it used to have red Renthal bars. I had a young family and it needed a top-end rebuild. This encouraged the sale back in 1998 when I bought a new house in Arrochar. I’m guessing that John bought it from the chap I sold it to in Glasgow! The only thing I still have is an original tank, fairing and seat unit in the loft – I just need to find another Rickman frame now! Bertie says: “Superb stuff John! Always good to find an ex-bike!”
