The bottom half of the engine is sorted now and I’ve managed to obtain some freshly made base gaskets. The cylinders have been re-bored by SPA motorcycle­s and I’ll be dropping in to see just how neat a job they’ve made of them. Not all re-bores are the same but I know stroker guru Rob Pemberton is extremely dedicated to getting the best out of old stinkwheel­s like my CS3C. Of even more importance is the compressio­n ratio which can literally make or break a two-stroke. Modern fuel, even the super green stuff, can pre-detonate with these old style motors. Simply put, even though the so-called octane rating is allegedly the same the modern fuel is going bang in the cylinder head well before it should. So, our man that can will be measuring combustion volumes then machining the heads accordingl­y so the engine actually lasts more than a few days. This modern stuff they sell at the pumps is pants in our old bikes, end of!
