-

1994-1997 Triumph Speed Triple

The original was a modular machine in the T300 series family with a spine frame, 885cc triple producing 98bhp claimed. Basically frame and motor were from the Daytona 900. With clip-on bars and a single, round headlamp it was a cleanlooking design that won a lot of friends: just see the prices now! It also came (for 1997 only) in 750 form. Price then: £7699 (1994). Price now: £2800-£5000!

1997-1998 Triumph T509 Speed Triple

The first T500 series Triple, 108bhp from a motor held in that signature swoopy ally frame and single-sided swingarm. Engine capacity was still 885cc. First models came with clip-ons before moving to bars. Price then: £8299 (late 1996). Price now: £2000-£3500.

1998-2001 Triumph Speed Triple 955i

A few changes the big one being the motor (now the 955cc motor) and name change to both reflect that and not confuse people as to the capacity of the bike. Still a claimed 108bhp, but more torque. Chassis and swingarm now carried over directly from the Daytona sportsbike. 2004 saw a limited-edition with a black frame. Price then: £7939 (1998). Price now: £2000-£3500.

2001-2004 Triumph Speed Triple 955i

At the end of 2001 for the 2002 model year some refinements were made. In came engine mods (cylinder head re-design) which gave 118bhp, less weight (down seven kilos) and a new seat/tail unit which did alter the ergonomics a little. The three-clock analogue instrument cluster was replaced with a tacho/digital LCD speedo unit. Wheelbase is down to 1429mm and steering sharpened up by half a degree. Mirrors weren't as good as on previous model! Price then: £7649 (Oct 2001) Price now: £2500+

2005-2007 Triumph speed Triple 1050

The first Speed Triple designed solely as one, rather than based on the sports models from Triumph, this is also the last model to sneak into our 15-year or older rule. In came a 1050cc motor giving a claimed 130bhp output, under-seat exhausts, stubby rear end radial brakes (these copped some flak at the time) and poor pillion provision, improved handling all-round. Price then: £7639 (Oct 2004). Price now: from £3500+.
