Classic Motorcycle Mechanics

Good old days!

- Chris Nightingale

I was shocked and disappointed to read of Colin Halls’ reaction to the Chris Moss feature. Not at what he said because it seems a common defence nowadays that when someone is accused of being selfish they reply: ‘No, I’ve just got more important things to do or think about.’ Which is, pretty much, the definition of selfish. What shocked me was the age of Mr. Halls and his involvement and standing in classic motorcycling. I was expecting a much younger or newer rider to come out with such stuff.

As to how were you expected to help with ‘Mossy’s push in’. Well, bikers have been helping each other by the road-side since motorcycling began with great success and there are several ways to help which I’m not going to list. To assume you can’t help an ailing biker unless you’re in a van is a very strange thing to say.

Finally, to admit you won’t wave to a fellow biker because you may have more important things on your mind and to get a ‘well said’ from the editor of a classic motorcycle mag makes me a little depressed and kind of vindicates Mossy’s words, wind-up or not. Some fraternity we are, eh?

P.S. I have actually been involved in both towing and being towed by bike but no, I wouldn’t advocate it. It was terrifying, dangerous and hilarious in equal measure.

Bertie says: “Sorry you think I was insulting with a ‘well said’, but I was actually backing Colin’s hard work in his VJMC role. I also say ‘well said’ to you Chris! I would stop and help – if I could. I always ride past and give a ‘thumbs up, thumbs down’ to see if I get a wave to come and help!”
