One more on the ASG

-

Dear CR I am sure you have had many replies to Mark Kulczyk’s recent letter regarding the ASG motorcycle. I remember seeing it at the 1972 John Player International at Silverstone in August, the Race of theyear at Mallory Park in September and the Race of the South at Brands in the October of 1972. It was ridden and presumably built by Andreas Georgeades, who was from Canada. Hence Goodyear the tyres. The photo was taken at Silverstone, where I recall he crashed at Stowe in the race and retired. At Mallory, Andreas finished 11th in his heat for the Senior Race but non-started in the final. Unfortunately, I did not stop for the 500 Senior race at Brands, as it was the last race of the day. I recall that we were told the engine was actually based on the Honda S600 car engine and it ran on 16in wheels. It made a glorious sound with those wonderful megaphone exhausts especially around the Mallory Park ‘bowl’. With regard to Dave Simmonds, I attach a scan of a photo given to me by June Williams (my father’s secretary’s daughter!) after knowing my keen interest in car and motorcycle racing. June knew a number of the British riders at the time, including Bill Ivy and Dave. She also gave me a programme signed by Bill and others, which is still a cherished possession. I often wondered what the machine was and when it was taken. I would appreciate any further information (what, where and when) from you or your knowledgeable readers. Keep up the good work with CR, it brings back many great memories and it is quite scary how long ago it all happened... Best regards Brian Halford Northampton

Thanks for the letter and the photo Brian, it’s open to the floor for identification. CR readers, what do you know? Tony
