Diamante

Imagine if Joan Jett and Lzzy Hale had a love child…

You don’t have to listen to this record for too long to discover where Ms Diamante’s heart truly lies. The opener, and title track, is an almost note‑for‑note take on The Arrows’ I Love Rock And Roll, shot through Joan Jett’s prism. Diamante might come swaggering across like Kelly Clarkson with a Marshall stack, but her musical shtick is thankfully a little more nuanced than that. She references Pat Benatar in her lyrics, covers Heart (her Nancy Wilson is right on point) and in Kind Of Love takes on sex in a way that suggests she’s enjoyed Lzzy Hale’s thoughts on the matter.

There’s much grandstanding, but producer Howard Benson’s (My Chemical Romance, Chris Cornell) splashes of colour ensures it’s never too pedestrian a listen. She even manages to dial it back on the mournful Sorry and the rousing Black Heart.
