Caught by the fuzz
What was originally a split EP with three tracks apiece from Wisconsin fuzz-crazed duo 20 Watt Tombstone and their Indiana friends/rivals Left Lane Cruiser has now been upgraded (or hijacked) by 20 Watt Tombstone for their own promotional purposes. They removed their rivals’ contribution and added a couple of tracks from their 2015 album Wisco Disco.
If you think they should have changed the title, think again. It was Left Lane Cruiser who dubbed the duo’s sound “death blues”, but on the three newer tracks they come across like a raw, gob-splattered ZZ Top, awash with guitar distortion and a drummer whose playing frequently teeters on the edge without ever tipping over.
The sound separation creates a gruesome clarity that not even the singer’s growling angst can smear. The best track is Your Man’s A Jerk, with its great hook and a hollow howl of noise for a solo.
