The lazys

Tropical Hazards

- Julian Marszalek

Rockers from Down Under are heading up over.

Having relocated to Canada from their native Australia, 10-legged groove machine The Lazys set their sights on this side of the Atlantic. And, given the full-throated and beer-’n’bourbon-soaked ramalama of this album, there’s evidence to suggest that Britain will be theirs for the taking.

Taking their cues from the Bon Scott-era AC/DC songbook, The Lazys wear their hearts on their sleeves and make absolutely no claims to originality. It’s a strategy that serves them well, and they’re at peak performance when pressing then pedal to the metal on glorious opener Nothing But Trouble and the sliding grind of Little Miss Crazy. For the avoidance of doubt, the double entendres fuelling Half Mast Blues confirm where they’re at. Some more attention to their forebears is called for. The balladry of Somebody’s Daughter and Young Modern Lightning drags, but when they’re on fire The Lazys burn bright.
