“It had a huge effect on me, because the first time I heard it I realised that somebody from one genre could reach out and be part of another. David was a rock musician, but here he was stepping right into Isaac Hayes land. That orchestration was straight out of a ‘blaxploitation’ movie, and David claimed it. I thought that was the coolest thing ever. That song was like something out of a 1984 soundtrack movie. My young brain couldn’t conceive that somebody could pick another medium and make it his. It was like somebody took a toothpaste commercial and somehow made it cool. It’s a super-cool song.
