HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS
Juggernaut psych-blues, with a brick on the gas pedal.
As implied by the album title, for these beardo New Yorkers the groove is king. Choruses, middle eights, chord changes – all these are unnecessary fripperies, distracting from the relentless push/pull that drives this fourth album like a slave ship drummer.
As such, Geezer don’t have many surprises up their sleeves – what you get in the first 10 seconds of a given song is what you get full-stop (plus a guitar solo). But when the foundation is strong enough, the psych-blues clank of frontman Pat Harrington, bassist Richie Touseull and drummer Steve Markota is something to hear. Atlas Electra is eerie, twisty and heavy as a falling anvil, beating you into hypnosis with Harrington’s shamanic vocal. Drowning On Empty has a riff fat enough to sustain it, before Black Owl plays out the album with a stomp you’ll still be hearing in your sleep. ■■■■■■■■■■
