The Warner E Hodges Band

Just Feels Right JCPL

- Hugh Fielder

Still scorchin’.

As the guitarist and livewire on-stage foil in pioneering 80s American country punks Jason And The Scorchers, Warner Hodges lived life in the fast lane until the wheels came off in the 90s, leaving him with a hangover that required Alcoholics Anonymous. Nearly 30 years later he’s still doing it – sober now – in various reunions with Jason, in ex-Georgia Satellite Dan Baird’s band Homemade Sin, and with the Wildhearts man in Ginger And The Scorchers.

Now he has his own band, and an album to prove that neither age nor sobriety have diminished his hard rock attitude. It’s almost as if he has a mental filter that detects and eradicates any hint of sophistication. Having said that, he can play a subtle lap steel guitar when required.

Dan Baird has co-written several songs here that bring out the best of Hodges’s 70s hard rock guitar playing, although the occasional country swing sneaks in. ■■■■■■■■■■
