‘Men chat me up but I’d never cheat’

- By Mel Fallowfield

Full-time mum Kate Donaghey, 27, is married to Darren, 31, a call centre worker. They live together in Newcastle upon Tyne with their children Jaxon, five, and 22-month-old Dakota. Darren won a Punching Above Your Weight radio competition in 2014 over their mismatched looks.

SHALLOW AND VAIN

Kate says: “I don’t agree that being beautiful means you are more likely to stray. That’s a shallow and vain way of looking at things. Looks shouldn’t come into it; you’ll only stray if you’re unhappy in the relationship.

“I find my husband very attractive and we have two beautiful children, that’s what’s important to me.

“I don’t actually consider myself beautiful. I was bullied at school for being ugly.

“But I admit I do get propositioned by men a lot, even when Darren’s around. The other day we were walking along hand-in-hand and a guy linked his arm in mine and tried to drag me away. We make a joke of it, though – I have no interest in anyone else.

“I first met Darren 11 years ago when I moved into his street – he’s a lovely person with absolutely gorgeous eyes. We got to know each other gradually and, within three months, we started dating and I fell for him.

“But people have always teased him about punching above his weight and in 2014 he entered a radio competition for men dating women more beautiful than them. We found it hilarious when we won and bagged a two-week honeymoon to Rhodes.”

GETTING ATTENTION

Kate adds: “Sometimes I do get fed up with the attention, though. We’ve been in a pub and men have bought drinks for me, while Darren is in the loo or have tried to chat me up in front of him. But we just ignore it. Our relationship is strong and we’re happy. It’s not about looks, it’s about love.”

“Ironically, I’m more jealous if women talk to my husband. I really hate it when he gets chatted up.”

DARREN ADDS: “I trust Kate completely and I know she’d never cheat as we both value our relationship too much for that. I find it disrespectful when people try to chat her up in front of me and I used to dread going out. But now I just laugh it off. What you look like has nothing to do with how faithful you are.”

“I think people cheat because of relationship or emotional problems. Just because someone is more attractive, it doesn’t mean they’re more likely to be unfaithful to their partner.” Manisa, via Facebook
