‘Their relationship could suffer if one becomes a US star first’

- CLOSER’S psychologist Emma Kenny says:

“Mark has always been the dominating figure in relationships, but that’s completely shifted with Michelle – she’s very much in control. She’s an extremely talented actress, her career is taking off, and Mark is clearly in awe of her. They’re both ambitious and keen to crack America, but there’s always a danger there could be a need for oneupmanship as he starts to have some success too. Resentment could set in between them if Mark tries to persuade Michelle to take a backseat to support him. If she did take her focus away from her career to support him, it would need to be her own decision.

“Mark’s relied on his alpha male image for work and, as his career starts gathering momentum, the pitfalls of a long-distance relationship between the two might start to kick in.

“It can be difficult in any relationship not to be competitive, and if either of them go through career lows, I think they could struggle with the other’s success. If one becomes a huge US star before the other, it could change the equilibrium between them and have a damaging effect on their relationship.”
